China-Iran relations gained momentum during a high-level meeting between Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and his Iranian counterpart, Seyed Abbas Araghchi, on July 16, 2025. The talks occurred on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) foreign ministers’ meeting in Tianjin.
Wang Yi, who also serves on the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, reiterated Beijing’s firm support for Tehran’s sovereignty and dignity. He condemned power politics and pledged that China would stand against bullying and international pressure. Through negotiation and friendship, Wang urged continued development of ties with Iran and its neighbors.
As strategic partners, both nations committed to building deeper trust and cooperation. Wang emphasized the need to strengthen exchanges and foster long-term diplomatic growth. Araghchi responded with gratitude, praising China’s leadership as the SCO’s rotating president and commending its summit preparations.
Iran remains keen to boost high-level dialogue and expand economic and political cooperation. According to Araghchi, Tehran is determined to uphold its alliance with Beijing, especially in multilateral platforms like the SCO.
The Iranian nuclear issue also featured prominently in their talks. Araghchi reaffirmed Iran’s stance: the country has no interest in developing nuclear weapons but will protect its right to peaceful nuclear energy. He added that Iran is open to resuming discussions with international parties under conditions of fairness and mutual respect.
In response, Wang stressed that China consistently opposes the use or threat of force. He advocated dialogue and consultation as the proper methods for resolving disputes. Acknowledging Iran’s peaceful intentions, Wang expressed confidence in diplomacy’s role in preserving regional peace.
By affirming their shared goals, the ministers highlighted the strategic depth of China-Iran relations. Their dialogue also emphasized mutual respect, non-interference, and common opposition to Western pressure.
In closing, Wang pledged China’s ongoing commitment to support nuclear talks and Middle East stability. Araghchi echoed this sentiment, promising Iran would continue working closely with China on global security and energy policy matters.
This meeting underscores the growing influence of China-Iran relations within the shifting global order. As Tehran and Beijing align more closely, their collaboration is likely to shape future discussions around diplomacy, development, and regional balance.
