Laos and Indonesia have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral relations following high-level diplomatic talks held in Jakarta during an official visit by Lao Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Thongsavanh Phomvihane.
The discussions focused on expanding cooperation across politics, trade, investment, tourism, defence, and people-to-people exchanges as the two Southeast Asian nations prepare to celebrate 70 years of diplomatic relations in 2027.
Laos Indonesia Ties Enter New Phase
The official visit took place from May 4 to May 5 at the invitation of Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono.
During bilateral talks at Indonesia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, both governments reviewed decades of cooperation while outlining future priorities aimed at deepening strategic engagement between the two countries.
Officials praised the steady growth of diplomatic relations over the past 69 years, citing regular leadership exchanges and stronger cultural and economic links between the two ASEAN member states.
Both governments also confirmed plans to organize commemorative events in Vientiane and Jakarta ahead of the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations next year.
Laos Indonesia Ties Focus on Trade and Investment
Economic cooperation emerged as a key focus during the discussions.
The two sides agreed to promote investment and business partnerships in sectors where both countries see strong development potential.
The Lao delegation also held separate meetings with Indonesian business leaders, including representatives from the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, to explore opportunities for expanding commercial ties.
Officials discussed ways to encourage Indonesian investment in Laos while improving broader trade connectivity between the two economies.
ASEAN Cooperation Remains Central
Regional cooperation under the ASEAN framework also featured prominently during the talks.
Mr. Thongsavanh thanked Indonesia for supporting Laos during its ASEAN chairmanship in 2024 and emphasized the importance of maintaining strong regional partnerships amid changing geopolitical and economic conditions.
Both sides also exchanged views on regional and international developments while discussing the possibility of further upgrading bilateral relations in the future.
Cultural and People-to-People Links Expand
Beyond official diplomacy, the visit included efforts to strengthen cultural and social ties between the two countries.
The Lao delegation met representatives of the Indonesia-Laos Friendship Association to promote closer people-to-people engagement.
Officials also visited Indonesian companies and cultural sites during the trip, reinforcing broader cooperation beyond politics and trade.
Analysts say the visit reflects growing momentum in Southeast Asian diplomacy as ASEAN countries work to strengthen intra-regional partnerships and economic collaboration.
