At the Hannover Messe trade show in Germany, Unitree’s G1 humanoid robot captured attention with its fluid movements and human-like interactions. Standing at 4’3″ (130cm) and priced at $16,000, the G1 offers a highly dexterous, affordable option in the growing humanoid robot market.

Controlled remotely, G1 charmed attendees with handshakes, waves, and even playful responses to sudden movements. Although not yet fully autonomous, Unitree allows research institutions and tech companies to program its open-source software for various tasks.

The Global Competition Intensifies

Unitree is just one of dozens of companies globally chasing the dream of humanoid robots that can work alongside humans. The idea is tantalizing — tireless workers who can adapt to both industrial settings and domestic chores like cooking and cleaning.

However, true humanoid autonomy remains elusive. Experts note that today’s AI struggles with the complex logic and reasoning needed for dynamic environments like homes or restaurants. Safety concerns, particularly regarding robot strength and the risk of accidents, further complicate mass deployment.

While tech giants like Tesla are also entering the race with projects like the Optimus robot, aiming for factory applications first, analysts believe Chinese firms have an edge. Thomas Andersson, founder of research firm STIQ, points out that China benefits from an extensive robotics supply chain and government support, making development faster and cheaper.

Asia’s Investment Advantage

Nearly 60% of global funding for humanoid robots has been raised in Asia, strengthening the dominance of Chinese manufacturers. In Shanghai, a state-backed facility is already training humanoid robots to complete complex tasks, accelerating the push toward commercialization.

Meanwhile, companies like Tesla and BMW are integrating humanoid robots into their factories to streamline operations, signaling that industrial applications are the immediate focus before widespread domestic adoption.

A European Perspective

Bristol-based entrepreneur Bren Pierce, founder of Kinisi, has taken a practical approach. His company’s KR1 robot, designed for warehouse use, skips the complexity of legs by using a mobile base and mass-produced parts. By prioritizing simplicity and affordability, Pierce aims to make humanoid robots accessible for everyday factory workers without requiring advanced technical expertise.

The Road Ahead

Despite the excitement, experts agree that humanoid robots in homes are still a decade or more away. While companies continue to make strides in physical design, the AI necessary for safe, intelligent domestic robots remains a major hurdle.

For now, humanoid robots are poised to transform warehouses and industrial settings first — but the dream of the “everything robot” remains a powerful long-term vision.
