Singapore’s PAP Wins Big Amid Global Uncertainty and Economic Anxiety
Singapore’s ruling People’s Action Party (PAP) has secured a landslide victory in the 2025 general election, with 65.6% of the vote and a commanding majority of 97 parliamentary seats. This marks a resounding show of confidence in Prime Minister Lawrence Wong, who led the PAP through his first election since succeeding Lee Hsien Loong as party leader.
Singaporeans, facing concerns over inflation, job security, and international instability, chose the familiarity and proven governance of the PAP. Experts say this election was shaped more by fears of economic disruption and global turmoil — including ongoing wars and the U.S.-China trade dispute — than by local political scandals or opposition momentum.
Despite recent controversies involving PAP ministers, voters gravitated toward the party’s message of stability, particularly as U.S. tariffs and a looming global slowdown threaten Singapore’s export-driven economy.
Wong, who gained public trust managing the Covid-19 taskforce, credited voters for endorsing steady leadership:
“It’s a clear signal of trust, stability, and confidence in your government,” he said in a post-election address.
The Workers’ Party (WP) maintained its 10 seats and saw stronger vote shares in key constituencies, reaffirming its status as the dominant opposition party. However, it failed to expand further, partially hindered by recent legal cases against its leaders, including Pritam Singh.
The fragmented opposition, with 10 parties contesting, failed to offer a unified challenge. Analysts note that while voters support political diversity, they appear selective and strategic, backing only opposition figures with proven credibility.
Singapore’s electorate has once again demonstrated a preference for continuity in times of crisis, reinforcing the PAP’s decades-long dominance — and giving Wong a powerful mandate to navigate the uncertain years ahead.
