Peter Dutton Clarifies Stance on Climate Change Amid Debate Controversy

Australian opposition leader Peter Dutton has publicly confirmed that he acknowledges the reality of climate change, following widespread criticism over his comments during a televised leaders’ debate.

During the debate with Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, Dutton hesitated when asked if climate change was worsening natural disasters, saying, “I’m not a scientist” and suggesting he would leave such judgments to experts. He also noted that floods and disasters have historically been part of Australia’s landscape.

The remarks drew sharp criticism from environmental organizations and political rivals. Albanese responded with ridicule, questioning whether Dutton even believed in gravity. Climate Council CEO Amanda McKenzie called Dutton’s remarks “outrageous,” stating that political leaders must recognize the dangers Australians face due to climate change.

Facing mounting pressure, Dutton clarified days later during a campaign stop, saying: “I believe in climate change, and that it is a reality.”

While Dutton’s comments came under fire, Prime Minister Albanese was also challenged on his government’s energy policies. Though he has consistently promoted renewables as the most affordable power source, rising electricity bills have frustrated voters. Albanese avoided providing a direct timeline for fee reductions but pointed to the $150 AUD electricity rebate as part of his administration’s cost-of-living support.

The debate touched on other pressing election issues such as housing affordability and foreign policy, particularly Australia’s alliance with the United States.

With climate policy emerging as a central issue ahead of the 2025 federal election, both major parties are under pressure to offer clear, science-backed strategies.
