Hong Kong tower fire

In a heart-wrenching tragedy, a massive fire has devastated Hong Kong’s Wang Fuk Court complex, leaving at least 128 dead and hundreds still unaccounted for. The blaze, which broke out on November 26, 2025, in the Tai Po district, has rapidly become the city’s deadliest fire in six decades, with residents facing a desperate wait for answers.

The fire started in one of the tower blocks and quickly spread to seven of the eight buildings in the complex. Many residents, especially the elderly, were unable to escape in time due to thick smoke and a lack of fire alarms. “Hang in there,” were the last words Mr. Chung spoke to his wife, who was trapped in their 23rd-floor apartment. Sadly, she is among the missing.

Hong Kong authorities are conducting an intense rescue operation, but the scale of the destruction has hindered efforts. While several residents have been rescued, the search continues. The fire’s spread is believed to have been exacerbated by the building’s ongoing renovations, which involved the use of highly flammable materials.

The tragedy has sparked widespread anger, with residents questioning the safety of the renovations, which cost HK$330 million. Three executives from the construction firm have been arrested for alleged gross negligence. Residents are now grappling with the loss of homes, possessions, and, for many, their loved ones.

As the search for survivors continues, the emotional toll on those waiting for news is profound. “The worst-case scenario is that we have lost our flat, but the most important thing is that we are safe,” said one resident. Hong Kong’s government has pledged cash relief and set up a HK$300 million assistance fund, but for many, the road to recovery is long and uncertain.
