Rubio Cautions Israel on West Bank Annexation

West Bank annexation

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has urged Israel to halt any plans for West Bank annexation, warning that such a move could endanger the fragile Gaza ceasefire and undermine ongoing US-led peace efforts. Speaking before flying to Israel, Rubio said, “That’s not something we can be supportive of right now,” stressing that annexation would be counterproductive to restoring lasting regional stability.

Israel’s parliament, the Knesset, recently gave preliminary approval to a controversial bill authorizing the annexation of occupied Palestinian territories. The proposal narrowly passed in a 25–24 vote, pushed forward by far-right lawmakers outside Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s coalition. Analysts see it as an attempt to challenge Netanyahu and pressure him politically.

The Palestinian foreign ministry condemned the move, declaring that Israel “has no sovereignty” over Palestinian lands. The West Bank annexation would affect about 3.3 million Palestinians and 700,000 Israeli settlers living across territories occupied since 1967—areas the International Court of Justice deemed illegal under international law.

US Pushes for Peace Amid Political Strain

Rubio’s visit follows trips by US Vice President JD Vance and two special envoys as Washington works to advance the 20-point Gaza peace plan. The first phase—implementing a ceasefire and delivering humanitarian aid—has largely held, despite scattered violations. Rubio expressed cautious optimism: “Every day there’ll be threats to it, but we’re ahead of schedule.”

The next phase aims to form an interim government in Gaza, deploy an international stabilization force, and oversee Hamas disarmament. However, ongoing debates around the West Bank annexation threaten to derail progress, potentially reigniting regional tensions.

Balancing Peace and Politics

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu faces growing pressure from ultra-nationalists calling for full control over the West Bank. While he has supported annexation in the past, he has hesitated to act, wary of alienating both the United States and Arab nations that recently normalized relations with Israel.

As diplomatic efforts continue, West Bank annexation remains a flashpoint that could determine whether the fragile Gaza ceasefire evolves into a genuine path toward peace—or unravels into renewed conflict.
