NewJeans Announce Hiatus After Court Ruling in Label Dispute

1 min read

K-pop sensation NewJeans has announced a temporary halt to all activities after a major legal setback in their ongoing dispute with their label, ADOR. The group shared the news with fans during a heartfelt moment on stage at ComplexCon Hong Kong, marking what could be their final performance for now.

The decision follows a Seoul court ruling on Friday that prevents the group from acting independently—banning them from booking appearances, releasing music, or signing endorsement deals while their contract battle with ADOR continues.

The five-member group, which recently attempted to rebrand as NJZ, is fighting to cut ties with ADOR, claiming mistreatment and harassment, including serious allegations from member Hanni. Their conflict with the label escalated after the ousting of their mentor Min Hee-Jin by parent company HYBE in August 2024.

Despite announcing their departure from the label in November, the court sided with ADOR, stating there wasn’t enough evidence that the company violated contractual obligations. ADOR was found to have fulfilled its basic responsibilities, including payment.

We Had to Speak Up

During Sunday night’s performance, the group debuted a new track titled “Pit Stop” and took turns addressing the audience in both Korean and English. Members Hanni and Danielle told fans:

“It’s really hard for us to say this, but this might be our last performance for a little while… We had to speak up to protect the values we believe in, and that was a choice we don’t regret.”

The group emphasized that this break is about protecting their rights and dignity, promising to return “even stronger” in the future.

Despite the court order, the group performed under the name NJZ, which ADOR condemned in a statement on Monday, calling it a violation of the ruling and urging a meeting with the members to resolve the situation.

A Rising Star Paused

NewJeans, known for their fresh image and global appeal, ranked as the eighth best-selling music act globally in 2023. Their sudden pause leaves fans heartbroken and uncertain about the group’s future—but hopeful that their fight for independence will lead to a new chapter.
