China and India Partnership: Wang Yi Calls for Cooperation

1 min read

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi arrived in Delhi on Monday, advocating for China and India to view each other as partners rather than adversaries. His visit, marking a shift towards better relations after the 2020 Galwan valley clashes, signals a renewed effort to reset ties.

Wang Yi highlighted the positive trend in India-China relations and emphasized that both countries should focus on cooperation. Discussions with Indian Foreign Minister S Jaishankar and Prime Minister Narendra Modi covered a range of topics, from trade and pilgrimages to resolving the boundary dispute.

After agreeing on patrolling arrangements last year, the two countries have resumed cooperation in areas like tourism, visa services, and border trade. These developments are seen as steps towards normalizing relations after years of tension.

Wang’s visit also prepares the ground for Prime Minister Modi’s upcoming visit to China to attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit. There is speculation about potential bilateral talks with President Xi Jinping.

The thaw in relations comes against the backdrop of India’s growing tensions with the U.S., especially after President Trump imposed higher tariffs on Indian imports. Despite these external pressures, India remains committed to fostering a multipolar global order and reformed multilateralism, according to Jaishankar.
