Tragic Bus Crash in the Philippines Leaves 10 Dead, Over 30 Injured

Manila, May 2, 2025 — A bus crash on one of the Philippines’ busiest highways has left ten people dead and more than 30 others injured, after the driver allegedly fell asleep at the wheel, authorities reported.

The fatal collision occurred on Thursday along the Subic-Clark-Tarlac Expressway (SCTEX), a key route connecting Manila to several northern provinces. The bus, operated by Solid North Bus, reportedly plowed into multiple vehicles at a toll gate, including three SUVs and a container truck.

According to police, four children are among the dead. The bus driver and conductor have been detained, with the driver potentially facing charges of “reckless imprudence resulting in multiple homicides.”

Government Responds with Immediate Suspension

In response to the tragedy, the Department of Transportation has suspended Solid North Bus, a major player in the regional transport sector. Transport Secretary Vince Dizon said authorities would meet with nearly 30 bus companies on Friday to address broader safety concerns.

“If the driver was sleepy, we need to ask: how long had he been driving? Was he forced into long shifts?” Dizon said in an interview with GMA Network. “We can’t just offer patchwork solutions—we need systemic change.”

Victims and Community Impact

The Philippine Red Cross, which responded to the crash, shared photos of the mangled bus and surrounding debris. The humanitarian agency is also providing food, shelter, and aid to survivors being treated in nearby hospitals.

Many of those on the bus were traveling for the Labour Day holiday, which drew large numbers of commuters between urban centers and provincial towns.

Wider Safety Concerns in Public Transport

While bus crashes are sadly not uncommon in the Philippines, the recent surge in driver-related accidents has intensified scrutiny of transport companies. In April, 84 public transport drivers tested positive for illegal drug use, prompting suspensions across multiple vehicle categories including jeepneys and tricycles.

A tragic precedent was set in 2023, when 17 passengers died after a bus’s brakes failed on a notoriously dangerous mountain curve.

As investigations continue, this latest tragedy is fueling demands for stricter regulation, improved driver welfare, and enhanced accountability in the public transport sector.
