Ai, a female chimpanzee celebrated for her extraordinary cognitive abilities, passed away on January 9, 2025, at the age of 49. She died from old age and organ failure at Kyoto University’s Center for the Evolutionary Origins of Human Behavior. Ai had been part of the institute’s groundbreaking research on chimpanzee cognition since 1977, where she became a central figure in the Ai Chimpanzee project.
Ai Chimpanzee’s Contribution to Cognitive Research
Ai’s involvement in the Ai Chimpanzee project made her one of the most studied primates in history. Her ability to use numbers, identify colors, and solve complex tasks helped researchers understand the cognitive abilities of chimpanzees. By the age of five, Ai could name numbers, colors, and objects from over 300 different samples. Her problem-solving skills were also remarkable when she unlocked her cage and escaped, demonstrating her intelligence and memory.
Ai Chimpanzee’s Artistic Abilities Beyond Tests
Outside of her cognitive tests, Ai had a creative side. She loved drawing and painting with marker pens, creating art without food rewards. This behavior added a unique dimension to her legacy, as Ai demonstrated artistic abilities alongside her cognitive skills.
Ai Chimpanzee’s Family and Lasting Impact
In 2000, Ai gave birth to Ayumu, a son known for his incredible memory skills, much like his mother. Ai’s lasting influence on the field was honored in 2017 when a scarf made from one of her paintings was gifted to renowned primatologist Dame Jane Goodall, celebrating the 40th anniversary of the Ai Project.
