Holiday Horror: Five Drown, Two Missing as Monster Waves Pound Australia’s East Coast

The Easter holiday turned tragic in Australia as powerful waves and hazardous surf conditions along the east coast claimed the lives of five people, with two more still missing, prompting a wave of grief and urgent safety warnings.

The coastal states of New South Wales and Victoria have been hit hardest, with emergency services stretched as they respond to multiple drownings and sea rescues.

A Deadly Start to the Weekend

On Saturday, authorities discovered the body of a man in the waters off Tathra, a coastal town in southern New South Wales. This followed the Friday deaths of a 58-year-old fisherman and two other men in separate incidents throughout the state.

In San Remo, Victoria, tragedy struck again when a group was swept into the ocean. One woman managed to survive, but another woman drowned and a man remains missing.

Meanwhile, rescue crews are still searching for a man who was swept into the sea near Sydney.

Officials Urge Caution Amid Dangerous Conditions

Victoria Premier Jacinta Allan called the incidents an “awful start” to the Easter weekend.

“My thoughts are with the families who’ve lost loved ones in such tragic circumstances,” she said. “And sadly, we may still receive more difficult news.”

The Surf Life Saving Australia (SLSA) organisation has renewed its calls for beachgoers to stick to patrolled beaches, where trained lifeguards can respond quickly.

According to Adam Weir, CEO of SLSA, over 630 people have drowned on unpatrolled beaches in the past decade.

“These coastal locations can present dangers — some visible, some hidden,” Weir warned. “That’s why we say: Stop, Look, Stay Alive.”

Unforgiving Seas During a Popular Holiday

The Easter weekend traditionally draws thousands of Australians to the coast for relaxation and recreation. But the ocean, unpredictable and powerful, has once again proven deadly.

With the weather forecast predicting continued rough surf, safety officials are pleading with the public to avoid taking unnecessary risks.

Safety Tips for Coastal Visitors:

  • Swim only at patrolled beaches between red and yellow flags
  • Always check conditions before entering the water
  • Never swim alone or under the influence of alcohol
  • If in doubt, don’t go out

As families mourn loved ones and search operations continue, this Easter will be remembered not for celebration, but for a string of coastal tragedies that could have been prevented with greater caution.
