Nanfeng Mandarins Leading the Global Market

Nanfeng mandarins are experiencing rapid global growth. Known for their thin skin, juiciness, and exceptional sweetness, these mandarins from Jiangxi province have gained significant popularity. With their rich history dating back to the Tang Dynasty, Nanfeng mandarins have become a prominent player in the global fruit market.

Expanding Harvest and Growing Exports

This year, Nanfeng County will harvest 300,000 metric tons of mandarins, grown across 14,700 hectares in Fuzhou city. The demand for these mandarins has been rising steadily. According to Fuzhou Customs, between January and November 2025, the county exported 66,000 tons of mandarins, generating approximately 410 million yuan (about $58 million).

Nanfeng mandarins have now reached over 40 countries, including those in Southeast Asia and the European Union. As the global appetite for high-quality fruit grows, the mandarins are becoming a sought-after commodity worldwide.

Historical Significance and Modern Success

The Nanfeng mandarin has a long history, beginning in the Tang Dynasty (618–907), where it was used as a tribute to the royal family. Over time, it became known for its delicate sweetness and grew into a prestigious fruit in Chinese culture. Today, its global expansion reflects not just the exceptional quality of the fruit but the rich history behind it.

Nanfeng mandarins continue to uphold their legacy. Their distinct taste, influenced by the unique soil and climate of Nanfeng County, sets them apart in the citrus market. This quality has helped them gain favor with consumers around the world.

Global Ambition: Exporting to New Markets

Nanfeng mandarins are expanding rapidly into international markets. On December 1, the first batch of mandarins for this year was shipped to the United States. A 25-ton shipment, valued at 300,000 yuan, will reach the U.S. market within the month. This milestone follows last year’s successful export to Africa.

As demand grows, the mandarins are expected to reach even more countries. This reflects the increasing popularity of high-quality, flavorful fruit from China, further strengthening Nanfeng mandarins’ position in the global market.

Government and Industry Support for Expansion

The Chinese government and local agricultural industries have played a vital role in supporting the Nanfeng mandarins global expansion. Efforts to increase agricultural exports and promote rural revitalization are driving this growth. Quan Chen, an official with the Nanfeng Agriculture and Rural Affairs Bureau, highlighted that helping Nanfeng mandarins reach international markets is part of a broader strategy to expand sales channels and support rural economic growth.

Furthermore, the government is promoting Nanfeng mandarins as a Jiangxi specialty agricultural brand. These initiatives aim to increase the product’s international recognition and contribute to the region’s economic development.

Supporting Rural Economy and Job Creation

The success of Nanfeng mandarins in global markets has had a significant impact on Jiangxi’s rural economy. As demand for the mandarins grows, job opportunities in agriculture and related industries have expanded. This has benefited local farmers and supported communities in the area. Increased demand has also led to the adoption of sustainable farming practices and improved logistics, enhancing the efficiency of the export process.

Nanfeng mandarins serve as an example of how agricultural products can revitalize rural areas. The success of the mandarins underscores the potential for other products to follow similar paths in global markets.
